Top Ten SEO Tips Checklist

Search engine optimization is important because it can make increase quality traffic to your website. If you help the search engines understand what your site is about it’s more likely that they will send visitors that are interested in what you have to offer.

There are plenty of information about SEO online but I thought I’d put the most common and important tips in an easy to digest list.

So, here’s a checklist of actions you can take to optimize site your site and improve the site’s rank in search engines.

  1. Use search engine friendly, content related URLs. If you have a page with pictures of
flowers. Name the page pictures-of-flowers.html instead of page41.html.
  2. Use keywords in the title tag and have them before the site name. “Flowers for everyone - MySite” is better than “MySite - Flowers for everyone”.
  3. Have unique, readable quality content.
  4. Use header tags appropriately with good keywords. For example <h1>Flowers for mother’s day</h1>
  5. Do not use navigation elements that can’t be accessed by a search engine, like JavaScript or Flash menus.
  6. Use keywords in links. When linking to a page about flowers it’s better to have the keyword “flowers” in the link rather than linking the text “click here”.
  7. Minimize outbound links but still link to relevant sites.
  8. Make a site map and make sure all links are valid.
  9. Encourage webmasters to link to your site. Provide the HTML they can use and don’t forget the keywords.
  10. Make the site somewhat complete before launching it. Search engines may cache pages for months before updating them again.
